From back-to-back winless seasons to a program reborn — this is how the Buffaloes are rebuilding their culture, their confidence, and their future.
For years, Tempe High School's football program struggled to find its footing — enduring back-to-back winless seasons and multiple coaching changes. Players faced not just the challenge of competition, but the instability that comes with constant leadership turnover. Morale was at an all-time low.
That all began to change when Coach Sean Freeman took the helm. Freeman recognized that a true turnaround would require more than new playbooks — it demanded a complete cultural reset. His no-negativity policy became the foundation of everything that followed.
He and his staff made it clear from day one: they were more than coaches. They were mentors, role models, and a support system. Whether answering late-night calls, providing personal guidance, or making sure no player went home hungry — Freeman made his mission personal.
"You started to see them take on that persona as well. That's an awesome thing to witness when your team buys into you as a coach."
— Coach Sean Freeman, Head CoachThe first rule of the Freeman era: negative energy is not welcome. Players are coached to compete, correct, and move forward — never to tear each other down.
Players perform for coaches who know them. Freeman's staff invested in every athlete as a person first — building the trust that makes hard coaching land.
Not just on the scoreboard — in the locker room, classroom, and community. The standard is non-negotiable and applied equally to every player regardless of role.
Success is built through process, not instant outcomes. Freeman's players are taught to measure themselves by their effort and growth — every single day.
No Buffalo is left behind. The program operates as a brotherhood that extends beyond football — players support each other in every dimension of life.
The top level of Tempe High School football. Varsity athletes represent the program in Arizona interscholastic competition, playing a full regular-season and playoff schedule. These student-athletes are held to the highest standard of performance, discipline, and character.
The freshman team is the foundation of everything. This is where culture is planted, fundamentals are built, and future Buffaloes are developed. Every first-year player is challenged, mentored, and prepared for the next level — on the field and beyond it.
The Buffaloes program develops athletes across six core areas — because champions are built in the weight room, classroom, training room, meeting room, and in the spaces in between.
Year-round S&C programming tailored to football athleticism. Speed, power, and injury prevention are built systematically — not just in-season.
Every player is taught to study the game. Film sessions build football intelligence, situational awareness, and the ability to make fast decisions under pressure.
Eligibility is monitored weekly. Players who need help get it — tutoring, study hall, and direct coach involvement ensure no athlete slips in the classroom.
Resilience, composure, and mindset are coached as intentionally as blocking assignments. Players learn to perform under pressure and bounce back from failure.
For players with collegiate aspirations, the program provides active HUDL support, recruiting guidance, and coach-to-coach outreach to help open doors at the next level.
Through Tempe Cares and community initiatives, players understand that wearing the Buffalo means giving back. Service is part of the program, not an optional add-on.
The Tempe Turnaround isn't just about wins and losses. It's about what happens when a group of young men decide to believe in something bigger than themselves — and find coaches who believe in them first.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible sponsors. Your unwavering support makes everything we do possible — enriching the lives of our student-athletes and strengthening our program from the ground up.

Tempe football thrives on rivalries, championships, and community pride.
