Tempe High School Football Moves Up to 4A: A New Era Begins

For years, Tempe High School’s football program struggled to find its footing, enduring back-to-back winless seasons and multiple coaching changes. The Buffaloes faced not only the challenges of competition but also the instability that comes with constant leadership transitions. That all began to change when Coach Sean Freeman took the helm. With a relentless commitment to discipline, resilience, and player development, Freeman is spearheading what many are calling the “Tempe Turnaround.”

A Program in Need of Direction

Tempe High football had fallen into a difficult cycle—one marked by inconsistency and defeat. Multiple coaching changes in just three years left players without a clear sense of direction, and morale was at an all-time low. The team had not recorded a win in two seasons, and rebuilding confidence in the program seemed like a monumental challenge.

When Freeman arrived, he recognized that turning the program around would take more than just new playbooks and practice routines—it required a complete cultural shift. His no-negativity policy became the foundation of his coaching philosophy. He instilled a mindset of perseverance, reminding his players that success is built through hard work, not instant results.

Changing the Culture, One Player at a Time

Freeman’s approach to coaching goes far beyond Xs and Os. He emphasizes accountability, discipline, and personal growth, ensuring that his athletes understand the importance of effort and attitude. The first step in the turnaround was setting high expectations—not just for wins, but for how players conducted themselves in the locker room, on the field, and in the classroom.

A key part of this culture shift was relationship-building. Freeman and his staff made it clear that they were more than just coaches—they were mentors, role models, and a support system for their players. Whether it meant answering late-night calls, providing guidance on personal challenges, or making sure no player went home hungry, Freeman made it his mission to uplift his team in every way possible.

    From Struggles to Progress

The impact of Freeman’s leadership became evident as the team steadily improved throughout the season. While the first few games were still tough battles, there was a noticeable difference in how the Buffaloes competed. They were playing with more confidence, more discipline, and, most importantly, a belief that they could win.

One of the standout moments of the turnaround came in the 2024 season when tight end Arthur Murphy emerged as a game-changing player, recording 910 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. His efforts earned him a place on the 2024 All-Fever Team, a recognition of his outstanding performance and growth under Freeman’s leadership.

The Buffaloes ended the season with a 5-5 record, a significant improvement from the winless seasons that preceded Freeman’s arrival. While this was only the beginning, it proved that Tempe football was on the rise.

    A Stronger, More Competitive Future

The Tempe Turnaround is not just about a few more wins—it’s about redefining what it means to be a Buffalo. Under Freeman’s guidance, players are not just improving their skills on the field, but also developing the resilience, discipline, and teamwork that will serve them long after their high school careers.

With renewed energy in the program, stronger training regimens, and a growing sense of unity, the Buffaloes are building a foundation for lasting success. Future seasons will be about building on this momentum, continuing to develop talent, and showing that Tempe High School football is back on the rise.

As Freeman puts it, “You started to see them take on that persona as well. That’s an awesome thing to witness when your team buys into you as a coach.”

The Tempe Turnaround is far from over—it’s just getting started.
